The wreckage of a plane crash in eastern England has become the focus of a search led by British archaeologists. The aim is to recover the remains of an American pilot who went missing during World War II. A specialized unit of the Defense Department is coordinating the effort to locate the remains of American service members who were prisoners of war or went missing in action. Over 72,000 Americans from World War II are still unaccounted for, though this number has been gradually decreasing as more sets of remains are found and identified. The excavation in Suffolk, England, is being carried out to honor the commitment of “no man left behind.”
